Methods

DHI vs FUE, explained.

Both are minimally-invasive, no-strip techniques using your own follicles. DHI is really a variation of FUE — here’s what actually differs and when it matters.

What FUE is

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) removes individual follicles from the donor area and implants them into recipient sites the surgeon creates. It’s the modern gold standard — no linear scar, natural results.

What DHI is

DHI (Direct Hair Implantation) uses an implanter “pen” that creates the site and places the graft in one motion, rather than making sites first. It can allow precise angle control and is often marketed for dense packing.

Which is right for you

In skilled hands both give excellent, natural results — the surgeon’s skill matters far more than the label. We choose the technique that suits your hairline design, density goal and graft count, and explain why at your consult.

The technique difference, in plain terms

Standard FUE is a two-step rhythm: the surgeon first creates the recipient sites (controlling depth, angle and density across the whole area), then implants the harvested grafts into them. DHI merges those steps — a hollow implanter “pen” is loaded with a graft and creates the site and places the follicle in one motion.

The practical trade-offs: the pen gives very fine control over angle and can allow dense packing, but it’s slower and more labour-intensive, which is why DHI is usually priced higher. Site-first FUE lets the surgeon design the entire recipient zone before placing a single graft. Neither is “more advanced” — they’re two routes to the same goal.

What actually decides your result

For both methods, outcome tracks the surgeon’s skill far more than the acronym on the brochure. Hairline design, the angle and direction of each graft, and how carefully grafts are handled outside the body all matter more than DHI vs FUE. When you compare clinics, look at consistent natural results and honest planning — not the marketing label attached to the tool.

FAQ

Questions, answered straight.

Not inherently — DHI is a form of FUE. Outcome depends on the surgeon’s skill and your case, not the marketing name.
It’s often priced higher due to time and tooling. We price by your actual plan, transparently.
Both avoid a linear strip scar, leaving only tiny dot sites in the donor area.
Both use local anesthetic and feel similar — discomfort is minimal in either.
Recovery is essentially the same; both avoid a linear scar and heal within about a week.
