Hair Loss on GLP-1 Medication
If your hair started shedding a few months into a GLP-1 medication, you're not imagining it — and it's usually not permanent. Here's the honest version of what's happening and what actually helps.
Mostly the weight loss. The shedding people notice on Ozempic and Wegovy (semaglutide) or Mounjaro and Zepbound (tirzepatide) is, in most cases, telogen effluvium — a temporary shed that rapid weight change and shifts in nutrition can trigger. Research through 2026 has linked GLP-1 medications to hair shedding, but the pattern reported looks like the same stress-shed seen after any big, fast drop in weight — not the medication destroying your follicles.
This distinction changes everything. Telogen effluvium is diffuse — more hair in the brush and drain all over the scalp — and it's usually temporary. Androgenetic (pattern) hair loss is patterned: a receding hairline, a widening part, a thinning crown, and it's progressive. Rapid weight loss can also unmask or speed up pattern loss that was already coming. Telling these apart is the first thing we do — because they're treated completely differently.
If it's telogen effluvium, usually yes. The shed tends to settle once your weight stabilises and your body is getting enough protein and key nutrients again, with regrowth over the following months. What slows recovery down is an untreated deficiency — low iron/ferritin, low protein intake, or a thyroid issue — which is exactly why a proper assessment beats guessing.
Don't panic, and don't rush into surgery. Sensible first steps: keep protein intake up as you lose weight, have ferritin (iron), thyroid and vitamin D checked, and give it time. Where appropriate, a clinician may discuss supportive options such as minoxidil, and in-office treatments like PRP can be considered. The point is to support recovery, not to over-treat something that's already going to improve.
Transplanting hair into a scalp that's shedding temporarily is a waste of your money and can even shock the surrounding hair. If your loss is a GLP-1-related shed, the honest advice is to treat the cause and wait. We would rather turn away a surgery today and earn your trust than sell you one you don't need.
If, after your weight and nutrition have stabilised, you're left with genuine pattern loss — a receding hairline or thinning that isn't recovering — and you have adequate donor hair, then a FUE transplant becomes a reasonable option. We'll map that with you honestly, and only when the timing is right.
